BA (Hons) Interior Design & Styling at Arts University Plymouth is one of a rare few degrees in the UK designed to develop your knowledge and taste for colour, surface and ambience in a range of luxury, commercial and domestic environments.

BA (Hons) Interior Design & Styling (Jan 2023 Start)

This module introduces students to the standards and expectations of academic practice required for degree-level study. Drawing from evidence related to the application of creative practice, students will develop core skills in digital literacy, information management, academic writing, referencing and communication - relating to the themes of creative practice and synthesised through the lens of the individual. Importantly, the skills and knowledge developed in this module will underpin all future study and help ensure sound academic practice.

This is a practice-based module is designed to support students to explore their creative practice unbounded by a core subject discipline. Underpinned through contextual study and supported by the Academic Skills for Creative Learning module, students will develop their individual creative practice in response to 2 x 6 week module projects. Students may retain practice aligned to a core subject discipline or begin to explore a multidisciplinary approach. Through experimentation, play and technical development, students on this module are encouraged to develop reflective and critical evaluation skills in relation to a range of visual outcomes.

This module introduces students to key theories and ideas and provides a range of critical approaches to support the investigation, interpretation and analysis of contemporary art, design and media. Students will study a range of concepts that have shaped the way that we understand art, design and media in its wider historical and cultural contexts. Students will develop core research and communication skills to help them to articulate and contextualise their understanding of the themes covered in this module, and the knowledge gained will support creative practice by developing an understanding of the relationship between thinking and making.

This module is designed to help students explore the shape and patterns of employment, to enable them to start to match their current skills knowledge and creative portfolio to those required to successfully compete for work in their intended career. Having identified areas for development, students will work with the module leader to update their Professional Development Plan (PDP) enabling them to identify those experiences and skills they will need to acquire during their degree course. The module will cover a wide range of general skills including personal SWOT analysis, effective professional communication with employers, CVs, applications, looking at freelance working, including starting to consider issues around contracts, intellectual property rights and working with agencies.

This is the second practice-based module and is designed to build upon and amplify learning in trimester one through the development of an independent body of creative work. Students may opt to retain practice aligned to a core subject discipline or continue to explore a multidisciplinary approach. Adopting a project planning approach, students on this module will plan and deliver an individual body of creative work in response to a project brief. Students will be encouraged to take risks in the development of their practice and to develop reflective and critical evaluation skills. Specifically, and through the development of critical reflection, students will continue to foster their creative and professional identity to deliver the effective communication of concepts and ideas within a creative arts context. By the end of this module, students will be able to clearly articulate their areas of interest and future creative direction.

This module provides an opportunity to expand and develop skills and knowledge, through the consideration of new approaches and methods that broaden and extend the student’s understanding of practices both in their immediate subject area, and the wider creative context in which they work. The module will encourage students to explore interdisciplinary approaches and methods in their subject field, and open up future possibilities for engagement with practices both within and outside their immediate subject area. As such, this module complements all of the student’s study to date, and contributes to their wider knowledge and understanding of creative practices. The module will develop an inquiry-led approach in the development of independent ideas and outcomes, through an exploration of a range of complimentary new skills, knowledge and approaches. Through research, analysis and reflection of ‘expanded’ interdisciplinary practices, students will engage in visual research and analysis, documenting their investigation through a digital reflective journal/blog (incorporating images, sketches, research and annotated written commentary).

Enhance your awareness of research-informed practice, the role of risk and failure, and the adoption of new or unfamiliar methodologies in developing creative practice. You will focus on the critical and practical processes used for idea generation, propositional and hypothetical creative outputs, rather than finished outcomes.
This unit will enable you to expand your skills in interior styling and trend awareness and support your first introduction to editorial, marketing and advertising solutions. It will be a combination of group project work and individual contributions. 
You’ll be introduced to aspects of styling for interiors, advertising and art direction as well as editorial shoots for magazines, formatting magazine page layouts whilst developing your graphic knowledge and understanding.

Think deeper about how creative solutions might help solve real-world challenges. Draw on expertise and ideas from the arts and sciences to provide alternative propositions for solution-focussed practical enquiry. 
As a creative practitioner, you belong to a global network of like minded individuals and groups for whom citizenship, social justice and the opportunities posed by creative learning and new technologies provide a rich seam for solution-based enquiry. 
This unit will support your creative development through the application of your specialist skills and knowledge, whilst also encouraging the adoption of new and/or unfamiliar methodologies or approaches.

Through the use of real-world scenarios (live or simulated), you will be encouraged to use the methods, knowledge and understanding gained in previous study to place your work in relevant professional and creative contexts in order to facilitate knowledge transfer into the public domain.
During this unit, you will plan and implement a live interior design trade show in Plymouth. 
You will be drawing on your knowledge of suppliers and from researching/visiting professional trade shows. You will be working in small groups, inviting external suppliers to showcase their products and invite professionals from the design industry including architects and interior designers. 
The trade show will open up opportunities for self promotion and vital networking with your audience. 
During the unit you will develop as a professional practitioner and understand the legalities and ethics behind being a designer. 
You will develop your self promotional materials in the form of a CV, portfolio and a social media platform and gain confidence in applying for job roles and liaising with industry clients.

Develop individual authorship in your creative practice, and ownership of your learning through a self-initiated project. You will be introduced to methods for managing and producing an independent creative project, developing skills in project articulation and management to include consideration for project scope, time and resources management. 
This unit offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your personal approach to interior design and styling. 
You will have creative control over your intentions and outcomes thus developing your decision making, time management and problem solving skills. 
This self-directed project will support your personal creative direction, as you take responsibility for the whole process from concept to final output.

You will be encouraged to further refine your aims and ambitions for your final year of study, by formulating and testing out ideas for your Final Project. You will present a creative pitch that outlines the key concepts and methods behind your project and demonstrates knowledge and understanding of appropriate contextual and professional frameworks.

You will produce a research-informed critical text that contextualises your research interests and demonstrates sustained critical engagement with your subject. This could be an extended critical essay or industry report; or an original publication (text &amp; image) and accompanying critical essay.

This unit will extend your understanding and consideration of appropriate audiences, end-users and markets for your work, and raise your awareness of industry-relevant technologies, techniques and innovations. Your learning will support the articulation of your personal career ambitions, informed by an awareness of professional contexts and graduate opportunities for creative practice.

The culmination of your undergraduate study providing a focussed period of consolidation and creativity, you will have the opportunity to realise a final major project to demonstrate your specialist knowledge and skills. At the end of the unit, you will have the opportunity to present this project to the public within the context of the annual PCA Summer Shows.
