Sustainable Glass Summer School

A 5-Day Masterclass in new sustainable techniques in glassmaking, for artists and designers.

<p dir="ltr">As part of its commitment to teaching sustainable practices in glassmaking, Arts University Plymouth is offering a new Sustainable Glass Summer School in <strong>Summer 2024</strong>.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Sustainable Glass Summer School is a 5-day, in-person taught short course for working artisans, artists, designers and craft educators ideally who already have knowledge and experience with hot glass blowing and glass forming. <br /></p> <p dir="ltr">Designed as week long masterclass, the course will introduce students to new knowledge and developments in climate-conscious techniques and methods in a mix of lectures, demonstrations, workshops and local visit to the South West coast of the UK to learn about the use of naturally-occuring source materials such as beach sand and seaweed and recycled products including recycled mould making and changes in glass properties during process.</p>

£1,100 total tuition (with materials provided) for the full 5 days

<p dir="ltr">A series of lectures, demonstrations, practical workshops, talks and a coastal visit. Demonstrations and discussions will be led by a roster of Arts University Plymouth and South West based expert technicians and artisans.<br /></p>
<p dir="ltr">You will produce several works using hot glass processes and develop a working knowledge of the sustainable hot glass processes covered. Processes and techniques you will cover will include:<br /></p><ul><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Techniques in working with the electric furnace vs gas furnace</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Using found beach items in your own hot glass work</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Understanding seaweed ash production for localised, home-based hot glass</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Using recycled glass for production of new objects</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Mould making using recycled products for hot class casting</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Circular production of studio and industrial glass - industry talk</p></li></ul>
<p dir="ltr">To enrol in the Summer School, students will ideally be adequately trained and experienced in traditional hot glass techniques. Alternatively, beginners can attend but will need technical assistance to complete some of the processes.<br /></p>
