What does a career in the creative industry look like?
Monday, 15 November, 2021 — At Plymouth College of Art we treat studying a creative degree as a stepping-stone to working as a creative professional.
<p>With the UK’s creative industries contributing more than £115.9 billion to the economy in 2019 according to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, there are real benefits in following your passion and studying a creative degree. </p>
<p>At Plymouth College of Art we treat studying a creative degree as a stepping-stone to working as a creative professional. We focus on teaching you how to build your own working practice with transferable skills that increase your employability, as well as giving you space to nurture your creative talent, and helping you build industry contacts as you study.<br /></p>
Curating work at Mirror gallery space
<ul><li>As part of the <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/international/turing-scheme"><u>Turing Scheme</u></a>, the UK’s international internship and study scheme, we can offer financial support to those wanting to study or work abroad as part of their degree. And it’s available to our recent graduates as well!</li></ul><ul><li>Our public exhibition space <a href="https://mirrorplymouth.com/get-involved/opportunities-for-students"><u>MIRROR</u></a> offers <a href="https://mirrorplymouth.com/get-involved/opportunities-for-students">several opportunities to our students</a> to gain experience in critical writing, interviewing artists, managing social media and curating artwork. This is especially useful for anyone interested in a <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-fine-art-2021"><u>Fine Art</u></a> or <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-museum-studies-2021"><u>Museum Studies</u></a> degree.</li></ul><ul><li>We also create opportunities for you to earn whilst you learn; from student ambassador positions to live briefs and competitions. We work collectively to bring the best work opportunities to our students. <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/posts/plymouth-college-of-art-students-get-creative-outside-the-classroom"><u>Just look at the local public art students were commissioned to paint on utility boxes.</u></a></li></ul>
“I aim to give students the tools to apply for their dream jobs. I work with individuals on a one-to-one basis to build their confidence and writing skills so they can talk about their art and succeed in their career.”
<p>Our expert team can help you with a range of things from CVs, cover letters, applications and interviews, to funding, industry experience, live paid briefs, work placements, peer mentoring, employer engagement and business advice.
