Playful, bold & fresh: Illustration students debut first issue of Laud magazine

Students pitch and design Issue 1 of Laud, a course newspaper that gives a look inside BA (Hons) Illustration at Plymouth College of Art.

Students have come together to pitch and design the first issue of ‘Laud’, a creative newspaper that goes behind-the-scenes of the BA (Hons) Illustration course at Plymouth College of Art.

From alumni interviews and staff features to students, across all years, narrating their experience as emerging illustrators, the playful first issue of Laud showcases the collaborative effort of second-year students Sean Morgan, Caitlin Angell, Keri Lock and Jess Holloway, who pitched and designed Issue 1.

It was so good that Newspaper Club featured it in their top 19 publications of 2019. That comes as no surprise, the mini-newspaper is a delight to explore with a coterie of characters dancing between the bold and colourful pages, highlighting the fresh talent soon to enter the industry.

Accompanying the student’s experience of the course are a handful of features on BA (Hons) Illustration alumni, established illustrators giving insights into working with the likes of LEGO and Waitrose, and travelling the UK on book tours.

We caught up with Lecturer & Subject Leader Sam Rowe about the success of the student publication: “The launch of Laud is one of those projects that we've wanted to do for a while but finally found the capacity for. And it turned out exceptionally — the patience and effort of our students as editors, designers and art directors was incredible and they succeeded in communicating the feel of our little creative community.

“Being able to turn over the outward expression of the course to a group of students has really paid-off; they took it seriously and (without coaching!) have spread a positive view of BA Illustration at Plymouth College of Art. It was an immense task and I have pride to match. Issue two will be in the works soon - watch this space!”

Read Laud (Issue 1) on Issuu.

Find out more about our BA (Hons) Illustration course.

Sir David Attenborough congratulates student Heléna Doré on book illustrations.

Read about our wellbeing collaboration with Illustration student Jua O’Kane.
