Jewellery and Silversmithing student scoops win at European pewter competition

Congratulations to third year BA (Hons) student Jonathan Daniels for scooping a win in the ‘Decorative Arts’ category at this year’s Pewter Live.

A Jewellery and Silversmithing student has scooped a big win at a European-wide metalwork competition.

Jonathan Daniels, a third year on our BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing course, came out on top in the Decorative Arts category at this year’s Pewter Live for his work ‘A Little Twist’.

The prestigious competition, now in its 26th year and organised by The Worshipful Company of Pewterers, provides a wonderful opportunity for aspiring designers to gain not only a valuable commission but a great deal of publicity.

Jonathan’s work is inspired by nature and natural forms and he uses various expert colouration techniques – such as patination, sand blasting and gilding – to create contrasts between the exterior and interior of the vessels he creates.

“I want to make pieces that I can be proud of,” Jonathan said, “using the surrounding countryside and beaches for much of my inspiration and continuing to push myself and to develop as a professional artist.”

The organisers of Pewter Live said that 2014’s competition was a tremendous success. “The variety and quality of entries was outstanding,” they said.

Maria Whetman, programme leader for BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing, said: “It’s a tremendous achievement to win an award at such a prestigious design competition.

“These competitions provide students with good experience away from the college and gives them a platform to build going into their careers.”
