You’ll work as part of an ensemble company (both digitally and live) and as a solo artist, to explore theatre-making practices and the actor-audience relationship, sharing creative spaces with performers, makers, directors, designers. You’ll encounter the worlds of performance, design, make-up, costume, props, lighting and projection and, using live and digital techniques, you’ll investigate the places where these worlds collide, where off-stage meets on-stage.
All students at our Palace Court campus learn additional skills through our ‘Skills Project’, designed to empower their learning experience and prepare them to develop the resilience and interpersonal skills needed to succeed at work and life beyond education.
Students from across the college work on live projects with collaborators including Tate, Barbican Theatre and Theatre Royal – and we’ve partnered with the British Film Institute (BFI) to bring the prestigious <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/study/pre-degree/bfi-film-academy-plymouth">BFI Film Academy to Plymouth</a>.

Plymouth College of Art’s IBCP will incorporate our acclaimed creative UAL Level 3 Extended Diplomas into a programme that also includes two International Baccalaureate Diploma subjects.
Adding the IBCP to your Extended Diploma is optional, and best suited to students aged 16 to 19 who have completed at least four GCSEs at grade 9 - 4 (A* to C) including English and Maths, and are ready to progress onto an A-Level equivalent course specialising in one of our creative subjects, with plans to go on to a competitive university or ambitious career.
The IBCP incorporates two International Baccalaureate Diploma subjects (choose from English Literature, Business Management or Environmental Systems &amp; Societies) and core IBCP skills and competencies that align with our existing Skills Project to help develop students with the integrity, communication and personal skills necessary for success in a rapidly-changing world. 
All IB Diplomas and the levels that they are taught are subject to demand - for this reason, applicants must list IB Diplomas on their application in order of preference.

Plymouth College of Art was awarded International Baccalaureate (IB) World School status in Spring 2019, becoming the first non-private education provider in the South West to offer the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP), which will be taught in conjunction with its existing A-Level-equivalent UAL Level 3 Extended Diplomas. IBCP students will hone these abilities further, through the IBCP core skills, designed to create exceptionally well-rounded learners with an international perspective on the world.
The core skills include Language Development, Service Learning, Personal and Professional Skills, and a final Reflective Project. The Language Development element will help you to become an international learner, by exposing you to a language programme that helps you to communicate in more than one language and furthers your understanding of the wider world, which is more important for UK students now than ever before.

The UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts is an exploratory two-year equivalent to A-levels, which you can study on its own or alongside our International Baccalaureate Career related Programme (IBCP).

UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts

To provide the student with an introduction to a range of activities essential to the development and delivery of a performance. It will introduce the basic elements of technique and impart an understanding of performance as a collaborative activity.

To provide the student with an introduction to oral, written and visual communication in performing and production. It will enable students to explore and analyse meaning and how to convey a message to an audience.

To provide the student with an introduction to the diversity of roles, responsibilities, employment and progression opportunities available within the sector. It will introduce the student to the importance of health and safety as integral to the performer and production and give an understanding of the characteristics needed for a career in the performing arts.

To provide the student with an introduction to the investigation of both historical and contemporary contexts and perspectives that influence the development of ideas within the performing arts.

To enable students to critically analyse, integrate and apply knowledge and understanding acquired in previous units and to explore the specific skills and attributes required for production and design in the performing arts.

To provide the student with an opportunity to critically analyse, integrate and apply the knowledge and understanding acquired in the previous units and to explore the specific skills and attributes required for their own personal practice.

To provide students with the opportunity to make use of the skills, knowledge and understanding developed through the previous units in the completion of a collaborative project. The unit will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning and enable them to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in greater depth.

To provide students with an opportunity to enter into a more formal dialogue of personal interrogation and diagnosis designed to identify strengths, enthusiasms and ambitions within a specific pathway, and to develop the requisite artistic, professional and vocational skills necessary for progression within their chosen discipline.

To prepare students, through a process of research, dialogue, reflection and evaluation, to identify and prepare for specific higher education or employment progression routes appropriate to their ambitions. The unit will enable the student to demonstrate the requisite practical, intellectual and communication skills necessary for progression.

This unit is designed to enable students to understand a range of critical and contextual perspectives and approaches influencing performing and production arts. Students will demonstrate their understanding through a personal research project in an area of interest, preparing them for the direction of their final project.

To provide an opportunity for students to engage in an extended activity related to their discipline of choice. The unit will enable students to take responsibility for their learning by responding positively to the greater opportunities for individual expression and creativity afforded, and to demonstrate their achievement through proposing and realising a project which integrates the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired throughout the course.

Throughout the world, the creative industries are booming. In the UK alone they contribute more than £100 billion to the economy* and employ more than 2 million people**. This number is growing faster than any other part of the economy. As working practices and technologies evolve, jobs in this sector will be some of the most resilient in the face of increasing automation. 
Throughout the Performing &amp; Production Arts course, we are learning through doing and exploring theory through practice.
Year One is very broad, we’re developing courage, skills and risk-taking in the widest range of performing arts disciplines. Imagination, body and voice, text work, devising, singing, design, directing, production, costume, lighting, collaborating, movement, ensemble work and more.
Year Two is all about you and developing your specialism. Who are you as a theatre maker? Where do you want to focus your journey into the future? We also love to engage with projects happening in the city and beyond. 
The content of this qualification is designed to give students every possible chance to develop the skills, competencies and knowledge that will lead to a successful future in the creative industries or the many industries that require creative talent to support their business or enterprises. 	
To be awarded the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication students are required to achieve a minimum of a Pass grade in the mandatory units listed under the Year One and Year Two headings on this page.
