Film grad Tom Kirkman specially invited to BFI panel discussion for ‘Process’

By Jake May

Following a heap of prestigious awards and screenings, college grad Tom Kirkman is continuing his winning streak as he gets ready to take part in panel discussions at the BFI this weekend.

The BA (Hons) Film grad – whose film ‘Process’ was screened at the London Analogue Festival, attributed a Special Mention for The Signs Award at the 12th Festival International Signe de Nuit, and won Best Student's Work' at the Cornwall Film Festival – has been specially invited to take part in discussions as part of the renowned 8th BFI Future Film Festival this Sunday 22nd February.

Tom has been invited to sit on the panel for the ‘Future Film Documentary Awards’ (you can book tickets online for it here) after being selected as one of six top short documentary films submitted to the festival this year as selected by The Future Film Institute. ‘Process’ will be screened to those in attendance and will receive feedback from their panel of industry experts

“This is another excellent achievement from one of our many talented Film graduates,” said Lucy Leake, Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Film

'Process' explores the materiality of film as a medium and parallels this with the idea that the act of making is become obsolete

“Tom is an incredibly unique and talented filmmaker. 'PROCESS' made use of endangered processes and technologies, as well as expired film stock, to explore the nature of creativity and the hands-on craft of filmmaking.

"It is a beautiful piece of work and a well-deserved for all its plaudits.”

‘Process’ is a documentary that deliberately blurs the lines between fact and fiction. It explores the materiality of film as a medium, and parallels this with the idea that the act of making is become obsolete. Hand developed and edited, 'Process' investigates the notion of fragility in the act of creating.

The BFI Future Film Festival, partnered with Little White Lies and supported by the BFI Film Academy, is now in its eigth year and comprises a packed line up of workshops, masterclasses, networking opportunities, screenings and Q&As at BFI Southbank.

Tom's exclusive invitation take part demonstrates him as an exciting film-maker for the future – as well as the strength of teaching and guidance our students receive at the college.
