Gallery Shorts | Echo

By Jake May

In October, eight Design Crafts students curated 'Echo' – a show featuring work from 18 makers from the Crafts Council UK Collection, aiming to reveal the potential to embrace both machine and handmade processes.

To find out about the experience, we sat down for a chat with students Fern Robinson, Fran Phillips and Sarah-Jane Rossi – watch it now above.

Filmed and edited by Round One Films – run by BA (Hons) Film graduates Robert Marshall and Aden Barwick.

Echo showcases the infinite possibilities available to artists through repeating a singular form, action or process and intensively layering and building pattern, resulting in unexpected discoveries and opportunities.

The process of making by hand can be a valuable trigger for determining an outcome; allowing for subtle changes in design, aesthetic and form to be driven by intuition. The machine, in contrast, allows for precise replicas to be created ‘perfectly’, presenting opportunities for complex and accurate designs to be produced.

The exhibition features 18 makers from the Crafts Council Collection and beyond, revealing the potential to embrace both machine and handmade processes. It seeks to question where we place value within contemporary craft, asking audiences to consider how each item in the exhibition has been produced.

Featuring: Angela Jarman / Dail Behennah / Drummond Masterton / Esther Ward / Geoffrey Mann / Jane Atfield / Jo Hayes-Ward / Junko Mori / Max Lamb / Naoko Sato / Pauline Burbidge / Rachael Woodman & Neil Wilkin / Ruth Harrison / Sally Freshwater / Shuna Rendel / Tord Boontje / Yoko Izawa

Echo is curated by a group of eight second year Contemporary Crafts students, working with the support of the Crafts Council and the exhibitions team at Plymouth College of Art.
