The Thrill of The New! Fashion graduate gives life to vintage clothes

A new 90's inspired business venture has been launched by Georgia Thompson, a Plymouth College of Art Fashion Communications graduate.

Plymouth College of Art graduate Georgia Thompson has wasted no time getting onto the fashion retail ladder. Since graduating this year, Georgia has already opened her own business, The Thrift Shop, selling second-hand branded clothing.

Full of vintage, retro and thrifted pieces chosen herself, stock is sustainably sourced and features one-off pieces that never go out of style. It’s a gap in the market that Georgia identified while completing her degree in BA (Hons) Fashion Communication (previously BA (Hons) Fashion Media & Marketing).

The reusing and recycling ethos is something that is close to Georgia's heart. Trend forecasting has earmarked second-hand clothing as a rapidly expanding sector in the coming years and Georgia made the decision to jump into the market early. Our students investigate current trends and market insights, enjoying access to global forecasting tools like WGSN and The Future Laboratory to enable real-time rolling analysis of industry activity.

"I've looked at thrifting a lot of wholesale stock that’s second-hand," Georgia said, "to encourage sustainable fashion and pieces that are thrifted and branded. So they're long lasting pieces, worth your money and good for the environment."

It’s an idea that Georgia knows appeals not just to students, but to anyone concerned with the throwaway nature that can be prevalent in the garment industry. “Younger people can see how fast fashion is affecting the planet and want to make a change,” she said. "There isn't really anywhere in Plymouth for students that focuses on what I want this shop to achieve. There used to be a couple of thrift shops but there aren’t any left like this one, so I thought it would be a good idea.”

Georgia’s investment has already paid off, managing to make more profit in the first few weeks than she earned in her previous job. This enabled her to invest in new stock, particularly womens clothing, with a new delivery of denim due in any day.

Studying with us played an important part in shaping Georgia's ideas around her business. “I loved my time at Plymouth College of Art,” she said. “I felt that everyone on the course had such diverse interests and were full of creativity. I had previously completed my first year at a larger institution, but here the smaller group sizes meant everything was more personal. At Plymouth College of Art I got so much more one-to-one time with subject leaders and a lot more personal help and guidance.”

As well as a physical shop, Georgia also sells through Dep-pop and Instagram, with an ASOS Marketplace presence in the pipe-line. In future she would like to open a larger physical shop and sell at festivals. “The style I am offering is a real Y2K / 90’s vibe, I think that look will go down well. Think Paris Hilton in The Simple Life!”

For Georgia, second-hand clothes are more than just a fashion choice. By purchasing a preloved garment, Georgia says “you’re becoming part of something special. Recycled garments create your own unique look and help reduce the world’s clothing waste, one beautiful item at a time!”
