International acclaim for Devon photographer

Katy Johnson, who studies BA (Hons) Commercial Photography, has won an IPA 2021 Honourable Mention in the International Photography Awards
<p dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.instagram.com/katyjohnson.photo/">Katy Johnson</a>, a <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-commercial-photography-1">BA (Hons) Commercial Photography</a> student, has won an IPA 2021 Honourable Mention in the International Photography Awards.</p> <p dir="ltr">Twenty-year-old Katy, from Newton Abbot, Devon, won the Honourable Mention in the category of ‘Editorial/Press - Environment’ for her image, ‘The farmer, the tractor and his land’. She was selected out of over 13,000 entries, from 120 different countries worldwide.</p> <p dir="ltr">The International Photography Awards conducts an annual photography competition for professional, non-professional, and student photographers on a global level, creating one of the most ambitious and comprehensive competitions in the photography world today. The IPA recognizes photography’s leading talents who are creating, shaping and defining the world of photography today.<br /></p>

<p dir="ltr">Katy said: “I was so pleased to get an honourable mention from the International Photography Awards, especially for this particular photograph of my partner George, a beef farmer in Torbay, with his tractor and land. He looks so proud! Going forward, I intend to work as a commercial photographer in and around Torbay, focusing on people and the things that they care about.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I originally chose to study <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-commercial-photography-1">BA (Hons) Commercial Photography</a> at Plymouth College of Art because the course fits perfectly with my career aspirations. Prior to studying at degree-level, I participated in Saturday Arts Club and other <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/about-us/young-arts">Young Arts</a> activities here. That helped me to understand the ethos and atmosphere at Plymouth College of Art, helping me to feel at home here.”<br /></p>

<p dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/people/tim-gundry">Tim Gundry</a>, Subject Leader of <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-commercial-photography-1">BA (Hons) Commercial Photography</a> said: “We were absolutely delighted to hear that Katy’s work had been shortlisted in such a prestigious photography award. The image was part of Katy’s submission for her Editorial Photography module, where students explore environmental portraiture, with a particular focus on the people and culture of the South West. Katy produced some outstanding work, and this image was a notable highlight, showcasing her excellent visual, technical and professional skills.
