Arts and Interdisciplinary Research - Dr Natalia Eernstman and Peter Kingston
The latest publication of AIREA, ‘AIREA No 3 (2021): Interdisciplinary relationships within spaces and bodies of collaboration’, includes research contributions in the field of creative education by Plymouth College of Art Senior Lecturer, Dr Natalia Eernstman, and MA Creative Education alumni, Peter Kingston.
AIREA is an interdisciplinary journal operating at the nexus of intersections between inter, trans, and multi disciplinary artistic practices and research. The editors seek to explore interdisciplinary art practices and their impact in contemporary artistic contexts, providing a platform of communication among researchers, artists, practices, theory and technology for extending the debate of interdisciplinary artistic practices and their appropriate methods as well as their potential.
Natalia's article, ‘Designing Collective Artist Residencies: Cultivating imaginative disruptions and light-heartedness in times of gravity’, was the result of an international research collaboration between Plymouth College of Art, The Wageningen University in the Netherlands and Gothenburg University in Sweden. The project, ‘Imaginative Disruptions’, explored the transgressive potential of art and making to engage groups of citizens and experts in imaginative conceptions of alternative environmental narratives.
‘Imaginative Disruptions’ took place through activities across three countries. In Cornwall, England, the team of academics and artists created ‘Retreat’, a collective residency in which adults and children creatively explored how to live when their homes and lives are affected by climate change. Peter’s article, ‘Building Teacherly Roles Together: An A/r/tographic Exploration of Agency in Constructivist Learning’, publishes the findings from his MA research project, in which he set up a self-directed community learning group. “Given that learner agency in making meaning from subjective learning experiences is central to constructivism, how can teachers provide structure without diminishing that agency?”
