Gem Pope graduated with a first class (Hons) Degree BA in Photography, Film & Imaging from Napier University, Edinburgh, before relocating to London to begin her commercial career. After several years of assisting a variety of world-renowned commercial photographers, working with clients such as Vogue, Q and Nokia, Gem formed her own freelance career based within the music & television industries both in the UK and in LA. Her clients have included Rock Sound magazine, Ninja Tune, Polydor & Mercury records as well as ITV.
Leaving the London lifestyle behind to start her family, Gem relocated to North Devon where she began associate lecturing at both Plymouth & Bath Spa universities. Two years ago she began teaching at Plymouth College of Art where she enjoys pushing her student’s creativity to the maximum, whilst sustaining her own commercial practice.
Gem is currently undertaking a body of research which is concerned with the evolution and relevancy of the photographic assistant within the twenty-first-century digital landscape. She spends her remaining spare time writing young adult fiction and deconstructing both photographic and cinematic narratives.
