What’s on in Plymouth August 2018

By Kat Peberdy

August is the perfect month to explore the city and everything it has to offer, with outdoor cinema and theatre performances making the most of the warm evenings and plenty of family activities for those enjoying a summer break. We've put together a list of some of the top workshops, exhibitions and events happening across the city in Plymouth's cultural calendar.

Want to give us a heads up for a forthcoming event? Email editor@pca.ac.uk or let us know on Twitter.

1. Shakespeare's Macbeth Open Air in the Secret Garden

'Something wicked this way comes…'

Macbeth is a good man, a courageous war hero, respected and loyal. He recognises an opportunity for advancement, he is talented, ambitious....and his wife even more so. But what lengths will he go to secure his power and what will he do with this power?

Macbeth is the fourth production in the Barbican Theatre’s popular annual ’Bard in the Yard’ programme, running outdoor performances at the iconic Royal William Yard site.

2. Royal William Yard Good Food & Craft Market

3. British Firework Championships 2018

The world famous British Firework Championships will return on 8 and 9 August, offering two nights of spectacular pyrotechnics that will illuminate Plymouth Sound.

Six top firework companies will battle it out over two nights, each putting on a ten minute display. The displays are fired from the Mountbatten breakwater and are designed to be seen from Citadel and The Hoe, making these the prime viewing areas!

If you fancy enjoying the fireworks from a different perspective, book yourself a place on South West SUP’s Night paddle event.

This year the parade will depart from the city centre, at North Cross roundabout, and then make its way up through Armada Way - providing a fabulous display of diversity - before arriving at The Hoe for the event opening, at 1pm.

A packed stage of performers will then entertain the audience for the next eight hours and the festival will include a wide selection of stalls, informations stands, a street food market, face painting and some surprises to be announced in the run up to the big day.
