Creating The Compton with graphic designer Laura Scott

The Compton is a brand identity created by graduating BA (Hons) Graphic Design student Laura Scott as part of a wider campaign to draw attention to the demise of Plymouth's historic Reel Cinema, and suggest potential routes forward for the building. 

Laura Scott is a Plymouth-based graphic designer and illustrator, passionate about making creative, provocative and engaging design and illustration for brands, publications, and people. Her playful style is clean and fresh, well-suited to branding, editorial, logos, packaging and UX/UI design. This can be seen in past projects including her BONK condom brand, designed to raise awareness of sexual health issues, and her conceptual designs for the BUFFBEAR fitness clothing company.

For the Degree Shows, Laura created the 1940s themed brand identity for The Compton, as part of a campaign to reimagine and save Plymouth city’s historical Reel Cinema, which is under threat of closure and redevelopment. As part of her brand development and campaign Laura researched the building and found that it was originally opened in 1938 as The Royal Theatre, equipped with a Compton Theatre Organ - lending Laura’s new brand its name.

To raise awareness of the plight of the Reel Cinema and fundraise for the Reel Cinema Group’s attempts to acquire the building before it is demolished, Laura created the 1940s themed brand for The Compton, including brand-guidelines, posters, stationery, stamps, food packaging, pencils, gift cards, uniforms and tickets. Each of these elements was then incorporated into a fundraiser where Casablanca was screened in a branded evening event.

Laura said: “When I found out that there were plans to demolish the Reel Cinema I knew that I wanted to use my skills to help fight for the building. It dates back to 1938 and is the last remaining picture house in Plymouth to still be standing since the war. The current Reel Cinema suffers by not having a USP to distinguish it from other local rivals, so I looked into the history of when the building was most popular and chose a 1940s theme for my hypothetical rebrand."

"My primary aim for the project was to raise awareness about the value of this old building and get people talking. I hope that the right people will consider preserving this beautiful building and architecture.”

Laura completed an Extended Diploma in Graphic Design with the college’s Pre-Degree teachers before studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design with Plymouth College of Art at undergraduate level. She currently works part-time as a Junior Graphic Designer for digital learning company Sponge UK, and plans to work with the company full-time after graduating. Sponge UK was listed by the Sunday Times in its 50 Best Companies to work for in the UK and has created e-learning content for clients including Coca-Cola, the NHS, and the United Nations.
