BA (Hons) degrees
We are excited to announce that Plymouth College of Art is offering a range of BA (Hons) creative courses through our distance learning provision, starting in January 2021. Our vision for excellence in art and design distance learning, under the banner of our Connected Campus, affords students flexibility in their studies whilst being a valued part of our community.
These three-year courses all share a common distance-learning first year while specialising in a chosen subject, then progressing into our named BA (Hons) awards in years two and three on campus in the UK at Plymouth College of Art.
January Start Degrees allow you to begin your studies in the Spring term from wherever you are based - whether that be Asia, America, Europe or the UK. A January 2021 start will suit applicants who were unable to begin studying in September 2020 or wish to reduce accommodation or relocation costs by studying remotely.
The distance learning element of these courses will finish in August 2021, allowing you to take a short summer break before continuing straight onto the second year of your chosen degree at our city-centre Plymouth Campus, towards the end of September 2021.
Who would this study-route suit?
The opportunity to start an undergraduate course in the Spring term will benefit a wide group of people, locally, nationally and internationally.
This route is ideal for students who have chosen not to travel to study overseas in Autumn 2020 due to travel restrictions or worries due to COVID-19. If you agree with any of the statements below, a January-start degree could be the perfect route for you:
- “I am an international student who found it hard to travel to study overseas in Autumn 2020 due to visa requirements or travel restrictions”
- “I am a UK student who was unable to fulfil plans to work or travel for a gap year or to enter employment”
- “I am interested in changing degree or returning to Plymouth to live and study without missing out on the initial semester of your degree”
- “I am a mature learner who is looking to change career”
- “I am looking to study remotely (locally, nationally or internationally) for one year to reduce the cost of accommodation and other living fees”
- “I am worried about entering a public space like university due to COVID-19 and cannot move to Plymouth but want to start a degree programme.”

How to Apply?

We are delighted that in 2019 the College was awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers, which is public recognition of the quality of our courses and the way that we operate.
Although many of our students do come in with top grades and high UCAS points, these aren’t necessarily essential for entry. We typically ask for a minimum of 112 UCAS points, but we understand that talented artists, designers and makers can have a wide range of relevant strengths and skills beyond formal qualifications. We’re just as interested in exploring your portfolio and discussing your creative experiences as we are in seeing your grades.
We recognise the value of a variety of qualifications and relevant experience and welcome applications from students who have followed less traditional routes. We also accept a range of international qualifications and will look at each application individually.
Interviews & Portfolios
All applicants will be required to show a portfolio of creative work, and have an interview with a member of Plymouth College of Art’s academic team. We welcome interest from students who may not have the traditional qualification profile, but can demonstrate their skills and abilities through the interview and portfolio process, and have the capacity to develop their academic skills during their first year of study.
Once we’ve received your application, we will set up your interview: if you are living overseas this will be an online video or telephone call. If you are successful, we will send you a formal letter of confirmation by email.
For portfolio and interview guidance, and a preview of what questions to expect at an interview please read our Interview & Portfolio Guide.
