Do you want to practice your English language skills in a creative and close-knit community? At our Arts and English Language International Summer School you’ll gain the essential English skills you need by engaging with contemporary topics, in an independent art school environment.

You’ll also get the chance to experiment in our studios through a range of design and making workshops, meet other students at social events, and explore Devon and Cornwall on local trips. Plus your stay will end with a two day visit to London, taking in some of the city’s iconic attractions.

Induction

Before you start your studies you’ll get a detailed initial assessment and needs analysis, to ensure you make the most of your time with us and learn at a level that’s right for you. Once you’ve completed this, you’ll get an individual study plan that you can discuss during one-to-one tutorials with your tutor.

When you arrive in Plymouth for your studies, as part of your induction you’ll also:

  • Meet and greet key members of staff on your first day.
  • Discover Plymouth through a city tour.
  • Make friends with other students through organised social events.
  • Find out important information about life in the UK, in our comprehensive welcome packs - including a map of the city.
Bertram Jayarajah, ED Creative Media Production student, and Laura Edmunds, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design lecturer.
Daily structure

Your classes will be made up of 8-12 students who’ll be learning at a similar level, and you’ll have 3 hours of English language lessons from 9.30am-1.00pm, Monday to Friday, with a break between 11.00-11.30am to socialize with other students.

In the afternoons you’ll focus on self-directed art, design or media project work, exploring topics such as ‘People and Places’, ‘Culture and History’ or ‘The Essence of Plymouth’. Supervised by our skilled staff, these project focused sessions will be tailored to each group’s learning needs. Evenings and weekends will be a blur of social activities, events and trips - but you’ll also get free time to relax and explore Devon with your friends and host family.

In your English language lessons you’ll learn grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as the the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. From discussions and role play, to watching films and listening to music - you’ll be actively participating in a wide range of activities to help improve your accuracy and fluency.

Through one-to-one tutorials with your personal tutor, you’ll get the opportunity to discuss your personal needs, the progress you’re making and any areas for development - an approach that ensures you’re always supported during your time with us.

You’ll also get access to exclusive Virtual Learning Environments, where you can access online resources and activities, and communicate with other students outside of your teaching sessions.
