FabLab - Young Inventors Club 12-16 (April 2017) — Overview


Brief overview:

The Young Inventors Club is a short course introducing young people to CAD CAM processes such as 3D printing and laser cutting as well as digital Design. Throughout the sessions you will be learning a variety of skills to work towards a designing a product which will then be pitched and a winner will be selected. Each session will introduce a new element to utilise in your designs such as how to create your design in an industry standard 3D design program.

Course breakdown:

Week 1:
The first session will be an overview of the Fab Lab with an introduction into the machines and the possible applications to any design, each machine will have a brief demonstration to help generate ideas. At the end of the session the Design task will be introduced.
Week 2:
In the second week will introduce the 2D design using a professional CAD software and how it can be used to create the first elements of your product.
Week 3:
In week 3 you will have the opportunity to expand on your 2D designs and create 3D models and pieces of your product along with a 3D scanning demonstration
Week 4:
In week 4 you will be introduced into the world of electronics with a demonstration using Arduino and a session on how it can be used in any design.
Week 5:
In the Fifth and final week, you will be pitching your designs to the group and through a vote a winner will be decided with a prize going to the top 3 teams.

Entry Requirements No specific requirements but a simple understanding of digital drawing and coding would be very helpful.

Materials and Equipment Enthusiasm and a desire to learn, other than that all materials are provided.

What to Wear Comfortable clothing, ideally with minimal tassels or other loose items because they could potentially become caught.

Bursaries are not available on this course.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.

Young Inventors Club Tutor

Ben Wheeler is a recent Animation Graduate with a background in traditional and modern animation techniques including 3D modelling and digital design. As part of his role as a technician in the FabLab he regularly delivers workshops and sessions to students as well as giving technical advice. He truly believes that technology has the power to enrich and enhance people's lives for the better and in a non-invasive way, which drives him towards making this goal become reality in his own life and for those around him.
