From script analysis to character realisation- on this course you will develop your practical and design skills for costume in performance.

<p>The unique strength of this course lies in its combination of technical focus with opportunities to experience the performance industry first-hand.</p> <p>Both academically robust and creatively stimulating, the hugely diverse range of processes and media that we have on offer makes us a truly exciting place to study costume production. Interdisciplinary collaboration is actively encouraged, particularly amongst your peers in film and other media productions and as a student at Arts University Plymouth you’ll gain unrivalled access to a range of digital processes, textile printing and 3D-making. <br /></p>

<p>Using dedicated studio workshops you will develop costume design interpretation, pattern cutting, wearable props and tailoring. You’ll also benefit from masterclasses led by experts in specialist areas such as millinery and costume enhancement.</p> <p>You’ll gain the most sought-after costume craft skills, including strong technical competence in pattern-cutting and construction for costume and accessories. You’ll learn how to cut and make costumes to industry-standard, with first-hand advice from wardrobe professionals, whilst benefiting from an enviable professional network through our links within the performance industries.</p>

Costume Production students have access to a wide range of facilities.

<p>Our programme incorporates research into the historical and cultural contexts of costume as well as giving you a critical understanding and appreciation of costume design principles.</p> <p>You will gain experience working on live commissions, developing essential organisational and communication skills, alongside entering international competitions, such as New Zealand’s World of Wearable Art and the Costume Society’s Patterns of Fashion, in which our students have reached the finals three years in a row (2016, 2017, 2018).</p> <p>Your learning will be supported by a dedicated team of professionals who have worked for theatre and TV companies including Channel 4 Royal Shakespeare Company, and West End Producer Cameron Mackintosh. You will also gain real-world insights from visiting professionals like Michele Carrighar (Game of Thrones) Paul Farnsworth (Lend Me A Tenor) and Susannah Buxton (Downton Abbey). <br /></p>

<p>In TV and film, our students have contributed to BBC’s ‘Poldark’, ‘Frontier’ by Take the Shot Productions, Canada, and BAFTA-winning director Robert Young’s film ‘Curse of the Phoenix’, which won the Platinum Award at Houston WorldFest, as well as working behind the scenes of smash-hit stage productions such as 'The Red Shoes', 'Rebecca' and touring shows from the Actors Wheel, ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘King Lear’.</p> <p>Our students also create costumes for exhibition purposes, gaining commissions from the National Trust, showcasing their skill at major events such as TheatreCraft and Destinations, London and attending immersive theatre to view large-scale costumes in action (such as Puy Du Fou historical theme park and Les Machines de L’ile).</p> <p>Students from this course have been awarded work opportunities at prestigious institutions, including Glyndebourne Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet and the National Theatre. Our horizons are global and opportunities for studying abroad at one of our international partner institutions are also available.</p>

<p><strong>In the 2023 National Student Survey, 100% of BA (Hons) Costume Production students agreed that, “the course challenged them to achieve their best work” and “the library resources supported their learning well”. </strong></p> <p>95% of students responded positively in the theme of questions regarding “Learning resources” and 92% of students agreed that “they had the chance to bring together information and ideas from different topics”, “the marking criteria used to assess their work was clear”, “the marking and assessment on their course had been fair”, “the assessments allowed them to demonstrate what they learned”, “they received assessment feedback on time”, “the IT resources and facilities supported their learning well” and “it was easy to access subject specific resources when they needed them”.</p> <p><strong>92% of BA (Hons) Costume Production students also responded positively to the newest NSS questions, “During your studies, how free did you feel to express your ideas, opinions and beliefs?”</strong> demonstrating how hard we work to create a campus culture where all students thrive in an inclusive and supportive environment.</p>
