Upholstery for Beginners and Improvers — Overview

Do you own an heirloom that needs some TLC? Whether you wish to indulge your interest in upholstery or have a specific piece of furniture to revive, this is the course for you. Work alongside an experienced upholsterer on your personal project and leave this course will a finished project to be proud of!


Course Content

Welcome and introduction to the basic upholstery coarse and what will be achieved through the 10 week course. Including teaching upholstery each and every week. Health & Safety issues in operating tools and equipment in your working environment

Basic understanding of traditional and modern upholstery techniques including stripping of furniture in the correct order; preparation of furniture prior to commencing upholstery work; choosing and applying the correct upholstery sundries for your furniture, for example, understanding how to apply fabric to furniture using adhesives and or other methods; and developing an understanding of the various fabrics and materials and their suitability and uses

Learn about the history and character of furniture in order to use the most suitable upholstery and renovation techniques and produce the most aesthetically pleasing result

Entry Requirements
None. This course is suitable for both absolute beginners and those with prior experience. You will work on a project that you agree with your tutor and should aim to keep the level of complexity appropriate to your ability and the time available within the course.

Materials and Equipment
Demonstration materials will be provided free of charge but you will be required to purchase your own materials in order to complete your personal creative projects. Tools will be provided. All upholstery sundries and suitable fabrics will be available each week to purchase. You will need to provide your own item(s) of furniture for upholstering. For beginners, we recommend you bring in a simple item such as a footstool to your first session. Please wear old clothes/an overall and strong, flat, closed-toe footwear. Upholstery fabrics are available from the tutor; remnant off-cuts vary from £2.50 to £30 depending on the length of fabric. A rough guide would be to allow £10 per metre. Other types of fabric can be ordered for you at retail cost.

Please note that all courses are subject to student numbers and will only run if sufficient numbers are achieved. Plymouth College of Art reserves the right to cancel a course if insufficient student numbers are recruited.
