Ceramic Handbuilding for Beginners — Overview
This course is for the beginner and covers easy-to-learn, basic methods of building with clay.
You will then use these simple techniques to make delightful objects, such as: pots, ornaments, sculptures etc. You will be encouraged to experiment and work with your own ideas and designs whilst being guided step-by-step along the way, towards using clay and glazes with confidence.
You will learn about the work of some contemporary ceramicists as well as historical examples of hand building.
(If you have already attended the beginners course on more than two occasions, are not eligible to enrol in this course. The improvers course will be appropriate).
Health and safety induction, different types of clay and their uses, pinch pots
Coiling and design development
Slab building and Slumping
Texture and use of oxides
Slips and Glazes
Weeks 6 - 10
Students can work on set projects or develop their own ideas in clay, using their acquired skills outlined above
No previous experience required.
Materials and Equipment
Materials for this course are included in the course fee. Please wear old clothes/an overall and strong, flat, closed-toe footwear.
