Professor Andrew Brewerton debates education on Renegade Inc. TV

By Phillip Buchan

Professor Andrew Brewerton, Principal & Chief Executive of Plymouth College of Art, has appeared alongside Graham Brown-Martin, author of ‘Learning {Re}imagined’ and founder of Learning Without Frontiers (LWF), as a guest on the talk show Renegade Inc., to discuss what innovation in education might look like and debate what the education system is really for.

“If you ask an art student what do you do, you’re unlikely to hear ‘I’m a student’. What you will hear is ‘I’m a fashion designer’, ‘I’m a filmmaker’, ‘I’m a glass artist’. That energy is the thing that we work with at Plymouth College of Art.”

– Professor Andrew Brewerton, speaking on Renegade Inc.

Renegade Inc. is a new talk show hosted by Ross Ashcroft, bringing together thinkers, writers, leaders and creators who question and re-think the conventional wisdom of modern life.

On the fourth episode of Renegade Inc., The Education Game, Professor Andrew Brewerton joins Ashcroft and Brown-Martin in hypothesising how we could begin to redesign education in the UK and encourage students to be successful and happy on their own terms.

“What needs to happen to convert the exam factories into more rounded organisations, that prepare all young people for life and work in the new economy?”

– Ross Ashcroft, Renegade Inc.

In 2013, in response to the ongoing drive to marginalise the creative arts in mainstream education within the UK, Plymouth College of Art founded Plymouth School of Creative Arts — the city-centre all-through free school for 4 to 16-year-olds.

“If you think carefully about what innovation might be in education, you end up asking a different set of questions.”

– Professor Andrew Brewerton

Together the school and college have established a radical, progressive continuum of creative learning and practice in the region, that extends from early years to Masters level study.

The school’s RIBA award-winning landmark building The Red House was formally opened by Tate Director Sir Nicholas Serota who hailed the opening as “a historic event in the history of education in this country”.

The episode of Renegade Inc. featuring Professor Andrew Brewerton is available to watch online and will be screened on the RTUK channel (Freeview 113 | Freesat 206 | Sky 512) at 7:30am, 1:30pm, 6:30pm and 11:30pm on Monday 20 March 2017.
