Plymouth College of Art selected for introduction in Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2017

By Kat Peberdy

New Contemporaries is the leading organisation supporting emergent art practice from UK art education institutions. With a legacy that extends back to 1949, New Contemporaries has consistently provided an independent and critical platform for art graduates.

The latest edition of Bloomberg's New Contemporaries features an introduction from Freelands Foundation founder Henry Ward, in which he discusses Plymouth College of Art's innovative approach to teaching craft as a forward-thinking independent art school. This follows the production of Thinking Making at the college, the second in a series of films from the foundation, highlighting the most exciting work happening in art education in the UK.

Actively working to address the issues facing emerging artists, New Contemporaries provides mentoring opportunities as well as financial support in the form of covering exhibition fees, travel expenses and materials. Notable alumni of the programme include David Hockney, Grayson Perry and Anish Kapoor.

Dr. Stephen Felmingham, Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Painting, Drawing & Printmaking, commented: "Bloomberg New Contemporaries is a significant cultural force in contemporary art and we are very pleased to be cited in the introduction as the degree course that is operating in an exceptional way in the UK with our focus on experimentation through materials and process.

"The college is a gaining real notice in the sector as a whole and this is another example of attention being given to what we do here and our radical ethos."
