Costume student shows off skills as stage make-up artist for award-winning show

By Sarah Packer

Second year BA (Hons) Costume Production and Associated Crafts student, Sophie Pring, has been showing off her make-up skills in a NODA Award-winning production of The Addams Family.

Jo Wilson-Hunt, company director for The Willow Tree Theatre Company, was heading up the theatre production and asked local students to help with the show and asked Sophie to supervise them, as well as doing make-up.

“I mainly work with costume, and being able to do stage make-up is just another skill I have that I utilised in this production,” says Sophie.

The Willow Tree Theatre Company's production of The Addams Family Musical has won The National Operatic and Dramatic Associations (NODA) – recognising outstanding achievements in the world of amateur theatre –  Regional Award for Excellence for Area Six.

Alongside this the show also received nominations for three other awards, including Visual Excellence, which will be announced at an awards dinner in February.

“Jo asked for Sophie knowing that she had the transferable skills for stage make-up and she knew she was developing her skills here at the college," says Marie Dunaway, BA (Hons) Costume Production and Associated Crafts programme leader.

"She felt Sophie had gained the responsibility needed for a job such as this whilst studying on our programme."

Sophie explains: “Whilst everyone was rushing around backstage with the pressure of the show looming ahead, I actually found I was really in my element and felt comfortable working with actors and supervising a team.”

It was a chance for Sophie to show off her stage make-up skills as well as be involved in a gothic production - a style that she demonstrates in her own work.
