From NASA to the National Trust - award-winning director shares her experience

As part of the ongoing Filmmaker Friday programme for our BA (Hons) Film students, award-winning Director Amanda Bluglass visited the college to lead a discussion on her work in independent cinema and commercial television.

Freelance Director Producer Amanda Bluglass initially started her career in journalism, spending twelve years working in BBC radio and TV news covering regional stories alongside working with national correspondents for the One, Six and Ten o’clock News.

Since turning her hand to filmmaking, her work has been featured on the BBC, Channel 4, Huffington Post and The Atlantic. With recent clients ranging from NASA and Samsung, to Etsy, National Trust and Photobox.

Amanda credits her love of telling stories and a passion for the arts for her distinct filmmaking style, she said “as a filmmaker I have a real love of photography and fine art”. This approach has seen her win over 30 awards for her work.

During her visit to the college she not only spoke about her career, but opened the lecture up to questions about clients, funding, networking and getting in to the industry. Students quizzed Amanda on commissioning unique soundtracks, the technical details behind some of her work and what it’s like on set with both large and small crews.

One project in particular captured the students’ interest, a piece produced to promote the 2012 London Olympics. Featuring famed diver Tom Daley, among others, ‘Beneath 360’ is a unique perspective on the art of high board diving. A 360º film with 6.1 surround sound audio, it was filmed using a range of surface and underwater cameras, and designed to be shown on a number of screens 6 metres high creating a truly immersive experience.

Amanda spoke of her visit and the importance of maintaining a line of communication between students and industry, “The video production marketplace is a crowded and competitive one, so it is important that future professionals have access to industry creatives, both from the perspective of being realistic about the ‘real world’ challenges but also to inspire and dream.

“I think it’s a privilege to be able to work within jobs that use our imaginations; it’s also exciting to meet so many motivated students with their original vision.”
