Making Learning: Pop-up School & Symposium

Tate Exchange at Switch House, Tate Modern

What is making as learning, and how is learning made? How do we learn through making, and where is your learning horizon?

Following in the footsteps of Tim Etchells, Guerrilla Girls and David Blandy, we’ll be taking over Tate Exchange on the 23rd, 24th and 25th January to set up a Making Learning: Pop-up School and Symposium.

Tate Exchange is an ambitious ‘open experiment’ which enables associate organisations to devise and develop creative learning through public participation at Tate.

Professor Andrew Brewerton, Principal of Plymouth College of Art, said: “We think of Tate as home-from-home: a cultural horizon for our community and a natural destination for artists from Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth School of Creative Arts.

“We hope that our friends at Tate feel equally at home here at the edge of things - at the college and at The Red House, in the heart of Plymouth - where we’re creating a crucible for creative learning and innovation.”

Whether you’re an observer, commentator, researcher, creator, teacher, tweeter or just curious, join us in exploring creative learning in education, drop in, observe, ask questions, take part in our open forum and leave your thoughts in our diary room and graffiti wall.

Pop-up School

Drop into our Pop-up School and contribute to our shared understanding of how learning is made. A group of students, staff and practitioners from Plymouth are setting up a school in Tate Exchange to explore new horizons in their creative learning.

They will explore Tate Exchange and the museum environment as a place of exchange, trust, generosity, openness – and risk – as they follow their creative inquiry in the public gaze. What will you make of this? What can we learn here? And what’s your role from now on in making learning?

When: 23-25 January 2017, 12-5pm
Where: Tate Exchange, Switch House, Level 5, Tate Modern, London

Making Learning Symposium

Alongside the school, our symposium takes the form of invited provocations and open debate. Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth School of Creative Arts and invited guests explore the transformational potential of creative learning and the future of arts education.

Making is as important as reading and writing, or mathematics and science. Our theme is a call to action: if ‘power separates people from what they can do’, then what shall we do?

This event is programmed by Plymouth College of Art, a Tate Exchange Associate. Download the programme here.

When: 23-24 January 2017, 12-6pm
Where: Tate Exchange, Switch House, Level 5, Tate Modern, London
