Visiting students on the BA (Hons) Animation and BA (Hons) Film programmes, award-winning director Barry Purves spoke about his passion for animation during a day of workshops and lectures.
The visiting lecture initiative on our BA (Hons) Animation programme brings students into contact with leading figures in the animation industry, to inspire their own journey and glean insights into the field and career they are entering.
Barry has won over 60 major international awards, from film festival Grand Prix and Best Director recognition to BAFTA and Oscar nominations for his filmmaking. He has worked on a number of notable projects in film and television, including Mars Attacks!, King Kong, Dangermouse and Rupert the Bear.
Tony Smith, BA (Hons) Animation Programme Leader, was delighted to invite Barry into the college as part of our programme of visiting lecturers.
"Having Barry here was a wonderful opportunity for all students to see how to mix the demands of series based Animation production alongside the passion to create your own independent films.
"I think students will recognise that meeting Barry will have an impact on their own personal development as animators having met one of the UK greats."
Barry has previously held workshops focusing on animation, and particularly acting for animation, in colleges around the world, and in all the major American studios including Dreamworks, Pixar, and Will Vinton Studios.
"His passion is very inspiring, he's radiant when he's talking about filmmaking. Listening to his lectures made me want to grab some materials and get making straight away, in fact I could do with a lecture from him with my morning coffee each day!"
– Romany Lipscombe, BA (Hons) Animation student
Barry was also recently recognised by the Edinburgh International Film Festival with an evening dedicated to the celebration of his work.
Referencing productions of Shakespeare's Hamlet alongside Dustin Hoffman's role in the award-winning Tootsie, Barry discussed narrative devices with ease while captivating the room full of students before moving on to the finer points of stop-motion animation. His years of experience in the industry then evident as he fielded questions during the Q&A.
"Finding out what inspired Barry, his influences and his tips for emerging artists was a great experience for me and the other students here today that I'm sure will influence our future projects."
– Elliot Rowe, BA (Hons) Animation student
