Masters in Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice at Plymouth College of Art

Off the Beaten Track

"Heads are round so thoughts can change direction ..."
Francis Picabia, 1879-1953, Dadaist, painter, poet and bon viveur.

The wisdom of established business practices is being challenged and raises questions about the nature of creative work in relation to changing cultural, socio-economic, environmental and ethical contexts. This new part-time Masters programme, with exit routes at Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate levels, is aimed at creative practitioners and graduates who wish to chart a new future, accelerate their existing practice, find new direction and/or start-up a new enterprise.

Is this programme for me?

You are passionate about your practice, to which you bring special ingredients, and from which you generate authentic, distinctive outputs. Testamount to your (quiet/loud) maverick nature, you realise that you need fresh stimulation and relevant skills in order to future-proof your creative career. The Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice Masters programme at Plymouth College of Art will challenge your intellectual, practical and creative ambitions by providing you with opportunities to showcase your current creative work and undertake internships in arts or business organisations, whilst nurturing your own self-directed critically-reflective learning.

What will I learn?

This programme will encourage you to explore, experiment, hybridise, stretch and transform your practice. You will be tasked with innovating, developing fresh commercial and/or social perspectives and interdisciplinary creative thinking in a real world environment. This will be achieved by Plymouth College of Art working with co-delivery partner ArtsMatrix, to provide a platform that nurtures, nourishes and alchemises your practice. Our approach to teaching and learning incorporates a rich mixture of external inputs from industry experts and entrepreneurs, internships, e-learning, networking and the encouragement of self-directed critically-reflective learning.

We aim to inspire you to become fascinated and knowledgeable about what really happens in creative enterprises. The programme is organised to deliver real practical outcomes that you can immediately apply to your practice, while rigorously testing your critical and entrepreneurial awareness.

How will I learn?

A characteristic feature of this course is a unique learning environment that supports inter-disciplinary discourse, mutual learning and individual support for your practice. Plymouth College of Art’s collaboration with ArtsMatrix, the internationally respected Skills and Enterprise Development Agency for creative professionals, ensures a pragmatic and intellectual framework for module delivery. ArtsMatrix have access to extensive creative industry links across the South-West, the UK and internationally, with the majority of ArtsMatrix staff also operating their own creative businesses.

Where will I learn?

For those studying on the Masters programme you will be able to take advantage of the extensive facilities at Plymouth College of Art and a dedicated creative workspace. Field trips, internships, work placements and projects with real enterprises/partners/communities in the South-West region provide an integral part of the learning landscape.

How much time and money will I need to commit?

This programme is offered part-time and as such you will need to be able to commit to one day a week for the duration of the programme, which will last two years. The programme cost for UK and EU students is £4000, which can be paid for in 20 equal monthly instalments of £200.

I’d be interested in finding out a bit more about the programme, who can I speak to?
