The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is a one year intensive course designed to maximise your opportunities to learn through discovery, experimentation and exploration. This is a course that is transitional in experience and intention and will expect you to be receptive to new ideas, media and ways of learning. Its main overarching aim is to prepare you to the highest level possible for progression to BA Hons or Foundation Degree or, occasionally to a work opportunity. This is achieved by a combination of diagnostic and specialist pathways which reflect the opportunities available at degree level both at Plymouth College of Art and Nationally. Through these pathways you will be able to develop your subject specific portfolio in preparation for degree course applications.
The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course has three parts or stages and consists of seven units overall. Projects and assignments reflect the levels and stages and students will move through a dynamic, broad diagnostic phase across creative workshops into a chosen pathway. From stage 2 onwards.
The pathways are:

Lens Based Media
The third stage of the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (unit 7) is a project proposed by the students and should be a culmination of the creative skills developed over the previous stages. This unit indicates the level of achievement at pass, merit or distinction.
Critical and Contextual Studies is integrated within the Foundation Diploma course and ensures a thorough knowledge of both historical and contemporary art and design. this will help you contextualise and critically review your own practice and development.
