BTEC ND Photography at Plymouth College of Art

What will I do on the National Diploma in Photography?

During the BTEC National Diploma in Photography you will explore and develop your creative skills across a range of traditional and digital photographic techniques. Through the exploration and development of processes and media successful students will be able to progress to degree level programmes or into employment.

The course will include the understanding and use of 35mm and digital SLR cameras along with medium format and 5 x 4 cameras.

Students gain an understanding of dark room techniques and photo/media software along with studio lighting which is all aimed at creative portfolio development.

What qualifications will I gain?
  • National Diploma Photography – equivalent to 3 full A-Levels
  • Learning Skills and Complementary qualifications are embedded into this course
What qualifications will I need?

We normally offer places for the BTEC in Photography to students who have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above and who can show commitment and enthusiasm for art and design through examples of creative work. Applications welcome from candidates without formal qualifications who can provide evidence of their creativity.

If you do not have the necessary experience or qualifications for the National Diploma in Photography we offer a First Diploma which upon successful completion may enable progression to a National Diploma course.

How do I apply for the BTEC in Photography?

We offer all prospective students an opportunity to request an advisory interview to ensure that you are placed on the most suitable course; this can be a good opportunity to ask questions and get some advice on what we like to see in a portfolio.

More detailed information on the interview process and advice on preparing a portfolio can be obtained from Information Services on 01752 203434 or by emailing enquiries@plymouthart.ac.uk

When we receive your completed application form we will arrange for you to have an interview and ask you to bring along examples of your creative work.

Whilst we are happy to receive applications at any time of the year, we would encourage you to apply as early as possible before the start of the course.

What can I do next?

Students may progress to a variety of higher education courses at Plymouth College of Art, for example Foundation Degree or BA (Hons) in Photography, Environmental Media Practices or gain entry to degree level courses at other Colleges and Universities.  Alternatively, the course furnishes students with both photographic and transferable skills, and careers advice to enhance employment prospects.
