BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles at Plymouth College of Art
The first year of the BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles is broad based, creative and experimental, enabling you to have a good understanding of a variety of areas within the field of fashion/textiles. It is a period of discovery as well as skill building. You should be open-minded and keen to try new things.
The second year of the BTEC is the opportunity for you to pursue personal interests within either fashion or textiles. You will increase skills and strengths to create high quality work for a professional portfolio, relevant to your chosen progression routes.
Both years include live projects such as the fashion show and exhibiting work, as well as the opportunity to visit exhibitions and take part in workshops with artists/designers working in industry.
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles course will include:
Design for Women’s, Men’s and Children’s wear with pattern cutting and garment construction. You will also develop skills in textiles, both printed and constructed and associated creative dyeing techniques. All work is supported by research and drawing, illustration skills and the end of year Fashion Show allows you to be engaged with modeling, choreography or styling and the teamwork required for this successful event.
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles programme is diverse enabling opportunities to work closely other appropriate art, design and media disciplines.
What qualifications will I gain?
BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles – equivalent to 3 full A-Levels
Learning Skills and Complementary qualifications are embedded into this course
NCFE Intermediate qualifications in specialist aspects of art and design
What qualifications will I need?
We normally offer places to students who have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above and who can show commitment and enthusiasm for art and design through examples of creative work. Applications welcome from candidates without formal qualifications who can provide evidence of their creativity.
If you do not have the necessary experience or qualifications for the BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles we offer a BTEC Level 2 First in Art and Design which upon successful completion may enable progression to a BTEC Extended Diploma course.

We offer all prospective students an opportunity to request an advisory interview to ensure that you are placed on the most suitable course; this can be a good opportunity to ask questions and get some advice on what we like to see in a portfolio. When we receive your completed application form we will arrange for you to have an interview and ask you to bring along examples of your creative work. Whilst we are happy to receive applications at any time of the year, we would encourage you to apply as early as possible before the start of the course.
What can I do next?
Successful students may progress to the Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) in Fashion or Textiles at Plymouth College of Art, or gain entry to degree level courses at other Colleges and Universities. Alternatively you may choose to look for employment.
