The Fashion degrees positively encourage, endorse and delight in creativity and individuality. This vocational route to gaining a degree enables you to explore and experiment with personal design concepts whilst delivering a robust programme of supporting skills and techniques. Areas of focus include design skills, pattern cutting, garment production, CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing), marketing, business and relevant supporting IT skills.
Of prime importance is the development of an individual and independent creative identity, vital to a successful career in this challenging and diverse industry. Modules are responsive to live briefs or developed with external partners which provide work-related learning opportunities giving you an ideal lead-in to employment. Helping you develop skills such as time management, communication and organization which prepares you for the rigorous, competitive and diverse world of the fashion industry.
During the first year of the Foundation Degree in Fashion you will acquire a combination of skills acquisition and creative and contextual development with an emphasis on acquiring a well structured knowledge base. The second year offers an opportunity to consolidate, extend and deepen this knowledge base. You will be encouraged and supported to become more independent and autonomous as learners and develop a greater degree of personal specialisation and professional awareness. It is expected that all students actively seek and obtain work based learning activities during the summer or autumn term to apply and extend their skills whilst continuing their degree course. Offering them the opportunity to apply and extend their skills learned during the first year whilst exploring possible career aspects. This course is suitable for part time or full time study .
Throughout the programme of study both conceptual and technological research is encouraged and perceived as a vital element of the creative process. Each area of learning aims to inform students design development and other aspects of the Fashion industry which can only be derived from an appreciation of in-depth inquiry.
The foundation degree programme aims to keep abreast of the ever changing fast moving fashion industry and produce graduates who are independent and equipped with a range of intellectual, imaginative and enquiring skills that are appropriate to ever increasing demands by the industry, for the need to turn fashion design into reality and celebrate all skills related to the industry as important.
Recent graduates have gone on to work as designers, garment technologists, stylists, pattern cutters, fashion retail managers, illustrators, fashion magazine editors and self-employed designers makers.
