Plymouth College of Art graduates 'in work and happy'
Published: 05-02-2010
Graduates from Plymouth College of Art say they are 'in work and happy' according to a national survey released recently. The Creative Graduates Creative Futures survey by the Institute for Employment Studies contacted 30,000 students nationwide to ask about their experiences following an education in the arts. The students contacted graduated between the years 2002 and 2004.
Of Plymouth College of Art students, 90% surveyed said that they were in work. Of those 72% had worked in the Creative Industries and 66% of students were working in their degree discipline area.
Linzi Price, Head of Careers at Plymouth College of Art says: “It’s fantastic for us to hear from students who are now well established in their careers, and for the survey to show that not only are they working, but they are happy in their work is what is really rewarding for us.
“Also interesting is that the survey revealed what is most important to graduates in their working lives. Things like making use of their skills and maintaining their creative practice scored more highly than earning a high salary to many.”
The survey asked not only about their jobs, but for their overall satisfaction in work. 87% of Plymouth College of Art students agreed that they were satisfied in their jobs and also said they were able to be creative in their work.
Linzi added: “Most important to our graduates was work placements and work-based learning, something which is imperative to success for all students.
“We provide ongoing career advice for when people have left College too. It’s important for us to keep in touch, and our Alumni contact us regularly to share their successes, many of whom have made great achievements in their careers.”
In the South West, 89,000 people work in the Creative Industries, a sector which is growing faster than the rest of the economy. In particular the region is recognised to have a vibrant arts scene and a thriving community of artists working in glass, metalwork, textiles, pottery, paint, woodwork, and jewellery.
Plymouth College of Art has provided the kick-start for many creatives. People like actor Charles Dance, Stephana Attard BBC Producer and Bafta winner, Candice Farmer underwater photographer, Zowie Boach co-founder of Boudicca fashion label, and Jim Bott comic illustrator and design manager for Marvel Comics.
In addition to many awards won by staff and students over the years, the College received commendations in the most recent Ofsted report where e-learning and widening participation were highlighted as ‘outstanding’. Additionally, the report stated: “The strong culture for equality of opportunity and diversity is outstanding.”
As a thriving, bustling College with over 170 academics, most of whom are practising artists drawn from the widest range of disciplines - it’s not surprising that it is the only College in the South West to win a Silver Status Investors in People Award.
