Financial Help for Further Education


There is range of financial support for those studying a post GCSE qualification here at the College. So that you understand what may be available to you a summary of the different funds in outlined below. All funds are applied for via the online enrolment process or, when you start, our internal MISonline system. For the new 16 19 Bursary you will need to apply via a form available from our Student Support team. You need to be accepted onto your course before you can apply.

16-19 Bursary

From 2011, EMA will no longer be paid to new applicants to post-16 learning. For those who are continuing students, EMA will still provide some support. Therefore, new students who are not receiving EMA and who meet certain criteria (aged under 19 on 31st August 2011) will be able to apply for help from the new 16-19 Bursary.
Those who do receive EMA and are in care, a care leaver, in receipt of Income Support of Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance will be eligible to apply for the 16 - 19 bursary under the 'better-off' rule.

Student Support Funds 19+

Each year the Government provides funds to help students in genuine financial hardship. Priority is given to those from families on the lowest incomes and to help those who need to overcome social and economic barriers to education.
These funds can be used to help you to continue with your studies by aiding with the cost of trips, travel, materials, child-care and registration fees.

Residential Bursary

If you live outside the Plymouth area and your daily journey to attend College would take longer than two hours (one hour each way) by public transport and therefore you have had to move to Plymouth to attend your course you can apply for a residential bursary.
Bursaries to assist with the cost of accommodation are available to students from households with income below £50,000. Awards between £1,500 and £3,458 are paid direct to landlords in monthly instalments (subject to a means test).

Childcare Bursary

If you are under 20 years of age you should apply to the Care to Learn Scheme by telephoning 0800 121 8989. If you are over 20 years of age you may be able to obtain assistance for childcare through the Student Support Fund.
