Plymouth College of Art Charitable Trust

Aims

The Plymouth College of Art Charitable Trust was formed in 2006 with two objectives:

  • To provide benefits to current and ex-students to support their continuing education
  • To support the College in its educational mission
The formation of the Trust helps to make clear the difference between College income, from statutory funding bodies and students’ fees, and income from donations and grants from benefactors and other larger charities. In this way, tax privileges available to registered charities can be used to increase funds to help students and the College.

Board of Trustees

The Charity is managed by a Board of Trustees, a maximum of two of whom are employed by the College. The Trustees are responsible for all funds of the Trust and how they are used, including investment policy and using the money according to the purposes of the Trust.

Existing funds

The trust currently administers two bequests:

  • The Jenefer Peter and Mary Peter Scholarship - The scholarship was endowed in memory of Cornish sisters Jenefer Peter and Mary Peter. Jenefer was an artist who studied at the College in the 1940s. Mary was an art historian and worked as the College’s Art Historian from 1965 until her retirement in 1982. She was an outstanding teacher who was much loved by her students. In order to be eligible for this scholarship the student’s parents must have been resident in Cornwall at the time of the student’s birth.
  • The Doris Gerrard Scholarship - This scholarship, for students born in the UK with the exception of Cornwall, was endowed in memory of Doris Gerrard who studied at Plymouth School of Art in the 1920s. She and her husband, painter Charles Gerrard, spent many years in India where she focused on drawings and sculptures of local characters. In her will Doris Gerrard specified that her remaining work and that of her husband should be sold and the revenue used for charitable purposes.

Both scholarships are awarded annually to degree students at the College, who demonstrate high levels of academic achievement, commitment, and a clear idea of how the Scholarship will benefit their studies.

Future funds

The Board of Trustees is charged with increasing the Trust’s funds by seeking donations and by making applications to appropriate funding bodies in order to further the Trust’s two objectives.
