About Plymouth

The Future of Plymouth
As a regional centre, Plymouth is undergoing a massive period of transformation with a major regeneration project. Launched in 2003, this project entitled ‘A Vision for Plymouth’ under the lead of Barcelona based architect David Mackay has identified key factors in making Plymouth a cultural and vibrant city from concept to realisation.
Already things are happening, new developments in Plymouth City Centre with the new shopping mall, a new Piazza area, improved links between the city centre and the Hoe as welll as residential and leisure areas being built around Plymouth’s expansive waterfront.
New developments also on the horizon include:
- Developments to Sutton Harbour, the main tourist area of Plymouth with the creation of landmark buildings encompassing further commercial and residential developments.
- Improvements in transport infrastructure with emphasis on water transport from the Hoe to Sutton Harbour, Millbay and beyond
- Developments of the Hoe waterfront area with creation of new pier and attractive walkways
A cultural quarter is also proposed, dedicated to cultural facilities and creative industries, of which the College has been identified as having a key part to play in this exciting development. The quarter will physically encompass the College’s location and its close proximity to the city’s museum and library. This vision of Plymouth ties in with new developments for the College with a revamp of the exisiting building and extension to the Gallery having recently taken place - now providing the look and feel of an Art College.
A clear statement highlighting the importance of the College and the creative industries not only to Plymouth but the South West region as a whole.
